AWS Offers Data Migration Options

Amazon Web Services (AWS), in preparation for its 2018 re-Invent conference, is introducing new ways that organizations can move large amounts of data to the AWS platform.
These options extend the AWS Snowball Edge data transfer appliance. It was first revealed at the 2016 reInvent. SnowBall Edge allows organizations to move up to 100TB data in just a few days and has built-in storage and compute. AWS has extended Snowball Edge’s capabilities to include database migrations as well as support for EC2 instances since launching it.
AWS announced Monday the general availability of two new Snowball Edge appliances, Snowball Edge Comput Optimized and Snowball Edge Optimized with GPU.
In a blog post, Jeff Barr, AWS evangelist, stated that both options include 42 TB S3-compatible storage and 7.68TB NVMe SSD storage storage. They allow you to run any combination up to 52 vCPUs (208 GiB) and any combination of instances that consumes up to 52 CPUs. “The extra processing power allows you to do more types of processing at edge.”
Barr stated that the GPU-enabled version allows organizations perform compute-intensive tasks like “real-time full motion video analysis & processor [and] machine-learning inferring.”
AWS has renamed the Snowball Edge Storage Optimized to reflect the release of these two Snowball Edge appliances.
AWS has also launched DataSync, a managed service that helps organizations transfer large amounts of data quickly to and from AWS cloud.
“AWS DataSync
Barr posted Monday that the protocol is super-efficient and purpose-built for data transfer. It can run 10x faster than open-source data transfer.” Barr wrote in a blog posting.
DataSync can be used by organizations to perform one-time data migrations. This allows them to transfer data from their premises to the cloud for analysis or to do regular data replications as part a backup/recovery program.
DataSync pricing is per GB. You can find more information about the service here.
